Incredibly thankful – to sponsors, our hostesses with the most-est at the Jube – Jen and Tarryn and the ever patient John – A/V guy, our attendees, presenters – from Gillian Kydd to Michele Gallant & Marnie McCormack and all the folks in between, YEGLive, the lovely young men from the Legislature who registered folks, Upper Crust, Devonian Gardens and the conference committee crew.

Watch this site for promised links and follow-up info.

Please respond to our wrap-up survey, coming your way soon.

See those of you who registered in Edmonton at the Jubilee Auditorium, Monday June 25.

Registration closes today. Don’t miss out!

Register here.

Thanks to the folks at YEG Live we are now open to accept your conference registration. Registration closes May 25th, 2012.

Registration is almost here and Beyond the Classroom is stepping out of the box. We have teamed with local e-ticketing business YEG Live to handle our registration needs. If you read their story you will see they are a perfect fit for a conference aimed at people who specialize in educating out of the box.

Those of us who are working on planning BTCC were more than excited when Karen Unland, of the soon to be Edmonton Journal School, suggested YEG Live at a meeting where no one sitting around the table wanted to do the job of registration. If you run a site, this next month to 6 weeks will find you knee deep in the application process for your available weeks next year, budgeting as well as running the current program. So we don’t need to tell you, how thrilling it was to learn there are trained professionals who will collect your information and payment safely and efficiently (nothing to be lost or late “in the mail”), provide us with frequent number updates for catering planning and even supply us a file that allows us to print name tags.

Come back, April 1 and click on our link to register for Beyond the Classroom Conference 2012.

We are very excited!

The 2012 Beyond the Classroom Conference will be held June 25-27, 2012 at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium and various Site-School Locations around Edmonton.

Please use the tabs along the top of this page to find information about the conference,  programme schedule and registration information.  We are still finalising some details, so check back in  for more information.

For now…  SAVE THE DATE and SPREAD THE WORD!

See you in June,

The 2012 Conference Planning Committee

We are very pleased with the results of our second Beyond the Classroom Conference (last year’s was held in Calgary in June 2009).

Over 55 enthusiastic people attended, from a variety of backgrounds and from across Alberta (rural and urban), BC and Newfoundland.  About 40% of the registrants were from sites that currently run a site-school, while approximately 60% were clearly interested in discovering more and possibly piloting a program.  The types of sites and organisations represented were diverse; we had people from government (Alberta Culture and Community Spirit; Alberta Tourism, Parks & Recreation; Canada Parks), museums (small rural to large urban), science centres, professional associations, school boards and FNMI groups.

Much valuable learning happened, both during official conference sessions as well as during breaks when delegates networked and shared.  The success of the conference was rooted in the speakers who volunteered their time and energy to share their knowledge and expertise, and the participants whose energy and interest was infectious and inspiring.  Thank you to all of you!

In the coming weeks, the Conference Planning Committee will be sending an email to all delegates with follow up information and resource links, as well as a survey that will help us identify our strengths and weaknesses in order to improve this conference, which we hope to host again in 2012.

In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to share your thoughts on the conference by posting a comment below!

Thanks again!

Hi everyone,

We’re so pleased with the rate of registration, and delighted to see so many people signing up from across Alberta (great representation from smaller towns!) and from other provinces.  We wonder if we will get any international attendees…

If you haven’t already, please register quickly to ensure your choices of site visit, as some are quickly filling up!

Session: Week-at-a-Glance: Site Schools from far and away

(please circulate)

This year’s ‘Beyond the Classroom’ Conference is being held in Edmonton from June 21-23.  The conference will explore the Open Minds / Inquiring Minds learning model pioneered by Gillian Kydd and Don Harvie.  This three day event seeks to gather educators currently working with this model, as well as draw educators with an interest in learning more and potentially starting a pilot program.

In the spirit of sharing and peer-to-peer education, we are providing several opportunities to learn specifically about what various current sites are doing.  On Day 3 of the Conference there will be visits to various site-schools in Edmonton and area (attendees will chose from Zoo school, Ice school, Fort Edmonton School and more).  But what about sites from outside of Edmonton?  How will they share what they are doing?  Well, please read on…

We are looking for site school coordinators interested in showcasing their week of program activities during a ninety minute presentation that will feature three speakers. This will be a fairly casual session based on peer-to-peer interaction and learning; our aim is to generate discussion and idea sharing inspired by the audience’s experience of three different sites through the presentations.  Each presenter will have 20 minutes to walk the audience through a week at their site, and 10 minutes for Q&A.  You will have the option of using slides (photos of students, projects, site, etc.) and / or hands on materials, as best fits your presentation.

Session Description

Week-at-a-Glance: Site Schools from far and away

Various presenters

90 minutes

Program coordinators from three different sites present an introductory ‘virtual tour’ of a typical week.  This session highlights sites from outside of Edmonton with a walk-through / slide-show of student experiences and the activities they engage in.  Session attendees will learn directly from coordinators and experience a diversity of approaches at a variety of locations as well as ask questions and share ideas.  This is a perfect opportunity to be inspired while also adding ideas and activities to your ‘site-school toolbox’.

If you are interested in presenting, please email me with the following info by Tuesday, May 25 at noon to kyla [DOT] tichkowsky [AT] gov [DOT] ab [DOT] ca:

1.      Name:

2.      Site:

3.      City:

4.      Year that your program began:

5.      Draft schedule of what a typical week at your site looks like for your visiting classes:

We are very excited to learn about sites outside of Edmonton, as is our audience.  We look forward to hearing from prospective presenters!  Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with any questions.
